What should I ask?
Pretty simple, ask whatever you want to know about. Try to keep it appropriate, but otherwise, just be yourself!

Q: Hi Mark! I love your broken jazz specially featuring Nia. Im now on repeat mode with 'More than a woman' I love the last seconds version of Dilla's Fall in Love. Could you just make it a long version?
A:
thanks! we had a lot of fun putting that arrangement together and performing it. the dilla outro was a spontaneous thing that happened the first time we performed it and now it's usually there every time :) sometimes it's longer, sometimes it's shorter - it's all about catching it live!

Q: When it comes to record, is the kinda thing where you move into a studio or are you doing everything from home?
A:
it really depends on what i'm doing. if i'm recording live drums, percussion, grand piano, horns or other acoustic instruments i'll be in a proper studio. if i'm working on the more electronic side of it, or recording vocals, strings sometimes, i'll do that at the home studio. i love to record live with other musicians too - that's something i always do in the bigger studio. you can definitely do a lot from a home setup, but for me, once you start dealing with acoustic instruments and multiple mics i prefer do be in a proper studio :)

Q: Hi, How have you dealt with being undercut with pay for gigs? It seems like it always happens to me even tho I do employ contracts now. Any advice? Also, is it worth playing free gigs to build ur name
A:
if you put a price tag on your work there will always be someone who can undercut you. the thing to do is to develop your own sound and style so that if someone wants You and Your Sound, then they have to (at least somewhat) respect your fee. someone else might offer them to do the same job for less, but if you really have your own sound that is unique to you, then that cheaper person will not be able to deliver what you can. if you sound miscellaneous, then you're more likely to lose the gig to someone who undercuts. there's a lot to be said too for developing a social rapport and adding the personal touch with your clients so there's a connection that's more than just coldly professional.
doing things for free can be good building - especially when you're starting out. just dont do it to undercut someone else. do it because you're in a situation for the love of it along with others. if you see cash flying around tho, maybe you should be getting paid!

Q: Hi Mark, not really a question, just a thank you, you inspired me to branch out from 'just' a keys player, to embrace technology and incorporate it into live on-the-fly. It's such a buzz!
A:
glad to hear you're exploring the music in different ways. definitely a liberating experience. enjoy! :)

Q: Hey there Mark! Looking forward to seeing you in Vancity this Sat night :) Quick question....thinking of upgrading from an MPC1000 to the MPC2500 is this upgrade worth it for sound and feel?
A:
took me a minute to get to this sorry! personally i think the MPC is only really worth investing in if it's a 3000. the 2500 is fun and has good functionality. if you really want a standalone piece of hardware, it's good. generally tho, i'd recommend native instruments maschine instead. whatever works for you, but for me the new MPCs aren't giving you anything extra special (which the old ones definitely do!) :)
